University City Area

University City, sometimes referred to as the University Area or U-City, is an edge city mostly within the city limits of Charlotte. The area is surrounding The University of North Carolina at Charlotte campus. It is found in Mecklenburg County, the northeastern corner. It is surrouded by the town of Harrisburg to the east and the city of Concord to the northeast. Attractions along University City’s outskirts include Lowe’s Motor Speedway and Concord Mills Mall.
University City is home to the University Research Park, one of the largest research parks in the state, and the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre Charlotte. IKEA is builing a store in the University City and will open spring 2009. This will be the first (and presently only) IKEA to be built in the Carolinas.
The University City area of Charlotte contains large companies such as TIAA-CREF and Wachovia which help contribute to the city’s prowess in the financial industry. IBM is also found in the Univeristy City.

The city of Charlotte includes a population of about 600,000 while the entire Charlotte metro area is over 2,000,000. It is a wonderfully clean and dynamic city that is growing.
